Dive into the enchanting world of cosplay at Kyoto Manga Museum

What is Cosplay?

Japanese pop culture is deeply associated with cosplaying and there’s no doubt about the excitement for it. The costumes are usually made by Japanese cosplayers who put a lot of effort into their creations.

The word “cosplay” is a portmanteau of two English terms, costume and play – both of which exit also in Japanese. It was first used by Japanese journalist Nobuyuki Takahashi in 1984 upon his return from an American World Science Fiction Convention held in Los Angeles. Takahashi found himself fascinated by the ornate garments that were being worn by some American enthusiasts, and consequently he used the term cosplay to refer to it.

In Japan, dress-up events started growing in popularity together with manga, anime and video game fandoms cropping up around the mid-20th century. Over time, an increasingly elaborate cosplay culture formed with organized conventions or meetings being conducted virtually everywhere to give fans space for exhibiting their outfits as well as showing admiration for fictional heroes. Today cosplay has become a worldwide phenomenon celebrated by various communities and gatherings all over the globe as some form of art based on love for powerful characters.

Japanese cosplayers are quite meticulous (like pretty much everything in Japan). Their attention to detail when it comes to their costumes, props and makeup elevate cosplay performances to a form of art.
